SURVEY: OG&E and PSO Customers Seeking Other Options
OKLAHOMA CITY – The Oklahoma-based public affairs firm Amber Integrated and the Alliance for Electrical Restructuring in Oklahoma (AERO) have released a survey measuring public support for choice and competition in Oklahoma’s electricity market. This survey was conducted from July 7 - 10, 2022 and included a pool of 500 registered voters in Oklahoma who are also customers of either Oklahoma Gas & Electric Company (OG&E) or Public Service Company of Oklahoma (PSO). Survey results were weighted based on age, gender, and party affiliation. This survey has a margin of error of 4.38% at a 95% confidence interval.

“The results showed an overwhelming desire among consumers to shop for an electricity plan that is right for them and to change the law to allow them to do so,” said Amber Integrated pollster Jackson Lisle. “There is not support among OG&E or PSO customers for the current monopoly system.”
Key findings include:
Fifty-four percent of OG&E/PSO customers say electricity prices in Oklahoma are too high, compared to 32% who say they are about right and one percent who say they are low.
Support for the concept of choice and competition in Oklahoma’s electricity market is strong. Seventy-eight percent of OG&E and PSO customers say they believe Oklahomans should be able to shop for electricity plans, similar to cell phone or internet plans.
When it comes to current energy suppliers, would you say you disagree or agree that consumers should be able to shop for electricity suppliers in the same way they can shop for cell phone, Internet or TV plans? Strongly / Somewhat
Almost two-thirds of OG&E/PSO customers say they would take advantage of the opportunity to shop for better deals if the law permitted it.
At 78%, a super majority of Oklahomans say they would support a change in the law allowing a variety of power producers to sell electricity to residential customers. That number remains virtually unchanged (77%) when asked if they would support a change in the law allowing a variety of power producers to sell electricity to business customers.
AERO, a 501(c)4 non-profit organization, has announced it will advocate for changes in the law that would allow for choice and competition in the electricity market during the 2023 legislative session. Learn more about AERO here.
